A routine news assignment turned violent on Monday when a photojournalist from Daily Trust was physically assaulted by a group of traders at the popular Mile 12 market in Lagos.
The journalist, who was on duty to document the prevailing market conditions and traffic situation, was reportedly attacked by traders who objected to being photographed. Eyewitnesses said the photojournalist was first confronted by a few agitated individuals, before being surrounded and physically assaulted by a larger group.
“They were shouting at him to delete the photos. He tried to explain that he was only doing his job, but they didn’t listen,” said a witness who declined to be named for security reasons.
The attackers reportedly damaged the journalist’s camera equipment and attempted to seize his press credentials before he was rescued by bystanders and security personnel stationed near the market.
The management of Daily Trust has strongly condemned the assault and called on relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. In a statement, the media house reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and the safety of its staff.
“This is an unacceptable act of violence against a journalist lawfully performing his duty,” the statement read. “We urge the Lagos State Government and security agencies to take swift action to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.”
Press freedom advocates have also weighed in, warning that such attacks contribute to a hostile environment for journalists in Nigeria, where incidents of harassment and violence against media professionals continue to rise.
The injured photojournalist is currently receiving medical treatment and is said to be in stable condition.
